Surgical treatment of malignant melanoma

      Once an uncommon malignancy, cutaneous melanoma is rapidly becoming a major health concern in the United States. It is estimated that 58,300 Americans will develop melanoma in 2002 and that 9600 will ultimately die [

      ]. Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in men and the sixth most common cancer in women. Melanoma represents 4.5% of all cancer cases. The increase in case number is only exceeded by new cases of lung cancer in women.
